The accident took place on the road between Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan and the capital Kabul. Officials said the truck overturned while carrying families who had been living in Pakistan and were returning to Afghanistan.

Laghman province officials said 18 people died in the crash. The dead included 10 children, five women and three men.

29 Injured In Eastern Afghanistan Accident

Authorities said 29 others were injured in the accident. Further details on the condition of the injured were not immediately available.

The crash highlights the risks faced by returning Afghan families, many of whom travel long distances with their belongings in trucks and other overloaded vehicles.

Afghan Returnees From Pakistan

Pakistan has tightened its position on Afghan migrants and refugees, leading to a sharp increase in return movements across the border. Since the start of the year, more than 447,000 Afghans have returned from Pakistan, according to international migration data.

Deadly road accidents are common in Afghanistan due to poor roads, unsafe driving and weak transport regulation after decades of conflict. Last year, a separate crash involving Afghan migrants returning from Iran killed dozens of people in western Afghanistan.
