₹2,000 Notes Worth ₹6,181 Cr Still in Circulation
Despite the Reserve Bank of India withdrawing ₹2,000 banknotes from general circulation on May 19, 2023, a significant amount still remains with the public. As of May 31, 2025, around ₹6,181 crore worth of these notes—roughly 1.76% of the original ₹3.56 lakh crore issued—are yet to be returned.
₹2,000 Notes Still Accepted as Legal Tender
Although no longer actively printed or distributed, ₹2,000 notes continue to be valid for transactions and purchases. Their legal status remains unchanged despite the halted circulation and returned volumes.
Redemption Channels Available
While commercial banks stopped exchanging these notes on October 7, 2023, the RBI maintains redemption services via its 19 issue offices across India. In addition, holders can utilize India Post—sending the notes from local post offices directly to the RBI, with the credited amount transferred to their bank accounts.
Encouragement to Timely Return
The RBI continues to encourage prompt return or exchange of ₹2,000 notes through its official channels. By doing so, individuals ensure they can utilize the full face value before future accessibility potentially becomes more challenging.
