Yunus Says “External Forces” Back Hasina’s Return
Bangladesh’s interim chief adviser, Muhammad Yunus, has said that certain “external forces” are supporting the return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh. He suggested that if India were given a free choice, it might continue to host her.
Yunus claimed that Hasina’s supporters abroad are hoping she will come back triumphantly to Bangladesh. He also expressed concern over the possibility of her making political statements while in India and said he had urged Indian leaders to avoid actions that interfere with Bangladesh’s political processes.
India’s Stance
In response, India has described the situation as a legal and judicial issue. Indian officials say dealing with Hasina’s return should involve consultations between the two countries.
Background
Sheikh Hasina has been in India since August 2024, after mass protests led to her removal and the formation of an interim government under Yunus. The Bangladeshi government has issued arrest warrants against Hasina for alleged crimes including corruption and human rights violations.
As political tensions remain high, Yunus’s remarks add a new diplomatic dimension to the debate over Hasina’s return and the role of outside actors.
