World Test Championship 2023-25: Teams’ Road to the Final
The 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) has entered its final phase, with teams vying for a coveted spot in the championship final at Lord’s. The qualification scenarios have been outlined, and here’s a detailed breakdown of each team’s chances.
India in Pole Position
India currently leads the table with a PCT of 74.24%, needing a minimum of 3 wins from 8 remaining matches to qualify. With series against New Zealand (H) and Australia (A) ahead, India is well-positioned to secure a place in the WTC final, though it will require consistent performances.
Australia Strong Contender
Australia follows closely behind India with a PCT of 62.5%. The Aussies need at least 4 wins from their remaining 7 matches, with crucial series against India and Sri Lanka. While they have a challenging road ahead, their form in recent matches has positioned them as serious contenders for the Lord’s final.
Sri Lanka: Outside Chance
Sri Lanka holds the third spot with a PCT of 55.56%. With 3 wins needed from their remaining 4 matches, Sri Lanka’s path is difficult, especially with upcoming matches against South Africa and Australia. However, if they manage to upset one of these powerhouses, their chances could improve dramatically.
Other Teams’ Slim Hopes
England, South Africa, New Zealand, and Pakistan are on the verge of elimination, with low PCTs of 42.19%, 38.89%, 37.5%, and 19.05%, respectively. Even if they win their remaining matches, they are unlikely to reach the final. These teams face a massive challenge and would need miracles to break into the top two spots.
