Wang Yi Hails China-Indonesia Global South Ties

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has said growing cooperation between China and Indonesia is setting an example for countries across the Global South, as Beijing and Jakarta move to deepen economic, technological, defence and strategic ties.

Wang Yi Highlights China-Indonesia Cooperation

Wang made the remarks during a meeting in Jakarta with Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, chairman of Indonesia’s National Economic Council.

He said stronger friendship and cooperation between China and Indonesia had supported the development of both countries while demonstrating how major developing economies could pursue mutually beneficial partnerships.

China has increasingly positioned its relations with Indonesia as an important component of its wider engagement with the Global South.

China and Indonesia Expand Economic Partnership

The latest discussions follow high-level meetings between Chinese and Indonesian officials focused on trade, investment, manufacturing, energy, minerals and emerging technologies.

Both sides have agreed to strengthen industrial cooperation while exploring closer collaboration in artificial intelligence, green energy, transportation and other strategic sectors.

Indonesia remains an important destination for Chinese investment, particularly in infrastructure, mineral processing and the electric-vehicle supply chain.

Defence and Security Ties Also Deepen

Wang’s visit also included the inaugural China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue and a joint foreign and defence ministers’ meeting involving senior officials from both countries.

China and Indonesia agreed to expand defence cooperation, including military exercises, equipment development and technology transfer. The two governments also reiterated support for maintaining regional stability and accelerating negotiations on a South China Sea Code of Conduct.

Indonesia continues to maintain its long-standing “free and active” foreign policy, seeking partnerships with major powers while avoiding formal alignment with competing geopolitical blocs.
