US Trade Chief In India For Pact Talks

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is in New Delhi for talks with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal as India and the United States work to advance an interim trade agreement under the proposed bilateral trade pact.

Greer’s visit is aimed at resolving remaining issues in the interim agreement, which forms the first phase of the broader U.S.-India Bilateral Trade Agreement. The two sides are expected to discuss market access, tariffs and a framework for expanding two-way trade.

The visit follows recent negotiator-level discussions held in New Delhi from June 2 to 4. Officials from both countries have been working to narrow differences and prepare the agreement for political-level clearance.

Jamieson Greer To Meet Piyush Goyal

During the visit, Greer is scheduled to meet Piyush Goyal and other senior Indian officials. The discussions are expected to focus on giving final shape to the interim pact before both sides move deeper into the wider trade agreement.

Goyal had earlier indicated that India and the U.S. were working to close open issues in the first phase of the deal. The interim agreement is being seen as a step towards strengthening trade ties and reducing friction in key sectors.

India US Bilateral Trade Agreement Push

The trade talks gained momentum after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed the issue earlier this year. Trump recently said the two countries were close to finalising a trade agreement and described PM Modi as a tough negotiator.

After the India leg of his visit, Greer is also scheduled to travel to Uzbekistan for trade-related discussions.
