UK Defends West Bank Settlement Import Ban
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has defended his government’s decision to block imports from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, saying Britain must act against what it considers injustice and support the prospects of a two-state solution.

Speaking in Parliament, Burnham said Britain had long supported a two-state solution but argued that diplomatic statements needed to be backed by concrete action.
He said the government was responding to settlement expansion and the displacement of Palestinians, insisting that Britain should take action where it believes unfairness is occurring.
The import restrictions were announced by Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband alongside additional measures targeting companies and individuals linked to settlement activity.
Britain Coordinates Measures With France and Canada
The UK move forms part of a coordinated effort with France and Canada to increase pressure on Israel over settlement expansion in the West Bank.
The three governments argue that continued expansion threatens the viability of a future Palestinian state and undermines efforts towards a negotiated two-state settlement.
Most of the international community considers Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank illegal under international law, a position disputed by Israel.
Israel Retaliates Against British Measures
Israel has strongly rejected the sanctions and responded by ordering the closure of Britain’s consulate in East Jerusalem.
Israeli authorities also barred 12 British nationals from entering the country as part of the retaliatory measures.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar welcomed criticism of the UK policy from Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, who accused the Labour government of putting domestic political considerations ahead of Britain’s national interest.
Burnham, however, maintained that international leadership required Britain to take a position when it believed injustice was taking place.
