Unsafe Satya Niketan Building Set for Demolition
Civic authorities will demolish an unsafe building adjoining the Satya Niketan structure that collapsed in Delhi and killed seven people, after inspections found the neighbouring property had significantly weakened and could pose a further safety risk.
Satya Niketan Adjoining Building to Be Demolished
Municipal Corporation of Delhi Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar said the adjoining building would be demolished in a calibrated, phased manner within one to two days.
The structure is currently being supported by around 18 to 20 iron guardrails placed at different points as a precaution. Officials served a notice after determining that its structural condition was unsafe.
Experts examining the building said parts of the structure appeared to lack adequate pillars and beams, while additional floors had been constructed over time. Authorities are assessing how these alterations may have affected its stability.
Six Neighbouring Buildings Sealed After Collapse
Six buildings in the immediate vicinity have also been sealed as authorities widen inspections following Sunday’s five-storey building collapse.
The collapsed property, which was being used as a boys’ paying guest accommodation, did not have a sanctioned building plan. Seven people were killed in the disaster, which has renewed scrutiny of unauthorised construction and structural safety in Delhi’s student accommodation hubs.
Delhi Orders Structural Audits of PG Buildings
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has ordered structural audits of buildings operating as paying guest accommodations across major PG hubs within a week.
The inspections will focus particularly on structures suspected of violating permitted height and floor limits.
The MCD has separately directed engineering officials across Delhi to inspect buildings in their respective zones and submit reports by September 10. Authorities are also preparing information for submission before the Delhi High Court as scrutiny intensifies over enforcement failures and unsafe construction.
