India Joins US-Led Global Push to Shape 6G
India has joined the United States and 24 other countries in an international initiative aimed at shaping the development of next-generation 6G networks, strengthening New Delhi’s role in global telecom standards, security and innovation.
India Joins Global 6G Cooperation Initiative
The announcement followed talks between Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on the sidelines of the G20 Innovation Ministerial.
The initiative seeks to ensure future 6G networks reflect shared priorities including national security, competitiveness, innovation, interoperability and resilient communications infrastructure.
Participating countries are expected to increase cooperation as international technical standards for 6G begin to take shape.
India Expands Bharat 6G Mission
India is simultaneously pursuing its domestic Bharat 6G Mission, aimed at positioning the country as a major developer rather than merely a consumer of next-generation telecommunications technology.
The government wants India to contribute around 10% of global 6G patents and standards as the technology evolves. The Bharat 6G Alliance has also expanded its international partnerships with research institutions, industry bodies and telecom organisations.
India’s 6G strategy focuses on indigenous research, secure networks, affordable connectivity and increased participation in international standard-setting organisations.
India-US Technology Cooperation Widens
Prasada and Lutnick also discussed expanding India-US cooperation in semiconductors, artificial intelligence and data centres, sectors increasingly viewed as critical components of the global digital economy.
India has sought greater investment and technology partnerships as it expands domestic semiconductor manufacturing and AI infrastructure.
The latest 6G initiative adds telecommunications to a growing list of strategic technology areas in which India and the US are seeking deeper cooperation while global competition over future digital infrastructure intensifies.
