Ukraine Repels Russian Drone Wave Over Kyiv Overnight
In a tense overnight escalation, Ukrainian air defence systems intercepted a fresh barrage of Russian drones and missiles targeting Kyiv. The assault, described as one of the most intense in recent weeks, prompted both casualties and infrastructure damage, even as the first U.S. arms shipments since the latest pause began to arrive.
Kyiv Drone Strike
Hundreds of Russian drones, alongside several cruise missiles, were launched toward the capital in a coordinated assault that lasted for over four hours. The attack triggered widespread alarms, forcing residents into shelters as fires broke out in residential zones, warehouses, and high-rise buildings.
Air Defences Hold Firm
Ukraine’s multi-layered defence network—comprising interceptor drones, mobile anti-air units, surface-to-air missiles, and electronic warfare systems—successfully downed a significant number of incoming threats. This rapid response helped prevent what could have been far more extensive devastation across the city.
Civilian Toll
Despite the defences, the attack resulted in two confirmed deaths and 13 injuries, with several buildings sustaining damage. Neighborhoods such as Shevchenkivskyi experienced shattered windows, vehicles damaged, and fires ignited. Emergency crews are currently working to extinguish hot spots and assess the full scale of the damage.
Resuming U.S. Support
The drone wave coincided with the resumption of U.S. military aid, including deliveries of artillery shells and mobile rocket systems. These shipments highlight Washington’s ongoing support, even amid vulnerable moments when Kyiv endures such intensified Russian strikes.
Broader Implications
Following the attack, President Zelenskiy appealed for stronger air-defence systems and increased sanctions on Russian energy exports. Ukrainian diplomats and U.S. officials are coordinating on recovery efforts abroad, but the wave of drone strikes underscores the urgent need for additional international assistance to bolster Kyiv’s defences.
