UK Says Iran Likely Behind RAF Fairford Plot

Britain has accused Iran of being “highly likely” behind a suspected security plot targeting RAF Fairford, a strategically important airbase used by the US Air Force for long-range bomber operations, prompting fresh sanctions and a diplomatic protest to Tehran.

UK Says Iran Likely Coordinated Fairford Plot

Prime Minister Andy Burnham told Parliament there were strong indications that the September 27 incident near RAF Fairford had been coordinated from Iran and was “almost certainly” directed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Five British nationals were arrested near the base on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offences. They were later released on bail under strict conditions, while another arrest followed days later.

Investigators reportedly found accelerants such as petroleum, although no viable explosives were discovered in the vehicles involved.

Iran Rejects UK Allegations

Britain summoned Iran’s ambassador and warned that further sanctions could follow.

Iran rejected the accusations and challenged the UK government to provide evidence supporting its claims.

British authorities announced sanctions against two individuals accused of facilitating hostile activity overseas on behalf of Tehran, including alleged links to criminal networks.

US Bombers Withdrawn After Security Scare

RAF Fairford is one of the most important US military aviation facilities in Europe and hosts long-range aircraft including B-1 and B-52 bombers.

Following the incident, US B-1 bombers deployed at the base were returned to the United States, while B-52 aircraft remained.

The case has heightened concerns over alleged Iranian-linked operations in Europe and the growing use of criminal or proxy networks for sabotage, cyberattacks and other hostile activity.
