UAE Suspends Iranian Airline Flights Over US Sanctions
The United Arab Emirates has suspended all flights operated by Iranian airlines to and from the country until further notice, citing new US sanctions targeting Iran’s aviation sector. The decision further reduces Tehran’s international air connectivity as neighbouring countries implement similar restrictions.
UAE Suspends All Iranian Airline Flights
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority said the suspension applies to flights operated by Iranian carriers arriving in or departing from Emirati airports.
Dubai has traditionally been one of the most important international destinations for Iranian airlines, with multiple daily services and significant travel linked to commercial and family ties between the two countries.
Iranian aviation authorities said diplomatic and technical discussions were underway in an effort to restore services.
US Sanctions Target 27 Iranian Airlines
The restrictions follow sweeping US measures announced earlier in September targeting 27 Iranian airlines and dozens of companies supporting their operations.
Washington has warned airports, fuel suppliers, ground-handling companies and ticketing providers that servicing sanctioned Iranian airlines could expose them to secondary sanctions and potentially restrict their access to the US dollar financial system.
Iran’s International Air Links Face Growing Pressure
The UAE joins Iraq, Oman, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkmenistan in restricting or suspending Iranian airline operations.
Flights from Tehran to Baghdad and Muscat had already been cancelled, while an Iranian flight bound for Dushanbe was forced to return after being denied permission to cross Turkmenistan’s airspace.
The expanding restrictions could significantly disrupt Iranian international travel if more airports and aviation companies choose to comply with Washington’s sanctions framework.
