India Orders 160 SAT-SAAW Weapons for IAF
India’s Defence Ministry has signed a ₹810.79 crore contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited for 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons, or SAT-SAAW, along with associated equipment for the Indian Air Force.
IAF to Get 160 SAT-SAAW Precision Weapons
The contract was signed in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category.
Deliveries of the 160 weapons are scheduled across 2027-28 and 2028-29.
The procurement is expected to strengthen the Indian Air Force’s ability to strike heavily defended enemy airfields while allowing its aircraft to remain at a safer distance from hostile air-defence systems.
SAT-SAAW Can Target Enemy Airfields From Distance
SAT-SAAW is an air-to-ground precision-guided glide weapon designed to neutralise important components of enemy airfields from long stand-off ranges.
The weapon can be launched from aircraft including the Jaguar, Hawk and Su-30MKI.
Stand-off weapons allow combat aircraft to attack targets without having to fly directly over heavily defended areas, reducing their exposure to surface-to-air missiles and other air-defence threats.
DRDO Weapon Has 60% Indigenous Content
The SAT-SAAW has been indigenously designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation and will contain around 60% indigenous content.
Important subsystems including the Initial Measurement Unit, Long Impact Delay Fuse and Twin Store Carrier are also being indigenised.
The Defence Ministry said induction of the weapon would enhance the IAF’s operational capabilities and strengthen India’s overall defence preparedness while supporting the broader push for self-reliance in advanced defence manufacturing.
