Trump Slams Norway After Missing Nobel Peace Prize
President Donald Trump has sharply criticised the Norwegian Nobel Committee after missing out on the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, saying Norway now carries an “indelible stain” for not recognising what he described as his record of resolving international conflicts.
Trump Attacks Nobel Committee After Pillay Win
Trump made the remarks after South African jurist Navi Pillay was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her work promoting international law, human rights and accountability.
Trump questioned the decision and said he could not understand why his own diplomatic record had not been recognised. He described Pillay as a largely unknown figure and criticised the Nobel Committee’s choice.
Pillay is a former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and former judge at the International Criminal Court and International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.
Trump Says Norway Will Carry ‘Indelible Stain’
Trump said the decision had left an “indelible stain” on Norway, where the independent five-member Nobel Committee selects the Peace Prize winner.
The Norwegian government does not directly choose the laureate, although committee members are appointed by Norway’s parliament.
Trump has repeatedly argued that his administration deserves credit for helping de-escalate or resolve multiple international disputes since he returned to office in January 2025.
Trump Again Highlights His Peace Record
The US President has cited diplomatic interventions involving countries including Cambodia, Pakistan and Israel while making his case for the prize.
Several foreign leaders have publicly supported Trump’s Nobel ambitions, although claims about his role in resolving individual conflicts have sometimes been disputed by parties involved.
Pillay will formally receive the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo on December 10.
