Trump-Iran Row Shakes US-South Korea Alliance
South Korea is facing renewed anxiety over the reliability of its decades-old security alliance with the United States after President Donald Trump abruptly ordered a major reduction in joint military exercises. Trump linked the decision partly to Seoul’s refusal to participate in the US-Israel military campaign against Iran, prompting debate over whether unrelated foreign-policy disagreements are influencing Washington’s defence commitments.
Trump Cuts US-South Korea Military Drills
Trump ordered the Pentagon to “substantially reduce” the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises just hours before they were scheduled to begin.
Following consultations, the exercise was shortened from 11 days to five, while several field-training components were also scaled back.
South Korean officials said they received no advance notification of Trump’s announcement, which was made publicly on social media.
Iran Dispute Raises South Korea Alliance Concerns
Trump specifically expressed frustration that South Korea had declined an American request to participate in efforts connected to the conflict with Iran.
The linkage has fuelled concern in Seoul that Washington could use security cooperation as leverage over unrelated diplomatic disputes.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has maintained that the US alliance remains essential but has also called for stronger “self-reliant defence capabilities”.
Seoul Reconsiders Strait of Hormuz Role
Despite declining direct involvement in the Iran conflict, Lee has signalled willingness to discuss practical measures supporting freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
The strategic waterway remains vital to South Korea because the country depends heavily on imported Middle Eastern energy.
The dispute has therefore intensified debate over how Seoul should balance its alliance with Washington, relations with Iran and the need to strengthen independent defence capabilities.
