Trump Envoy Floats Italy For Iran World Cup Spot

A Trump administration envoy has reportedly urged FIFA to consider Italy as a replacement for Iran at the 2026 World Cup, adding a political twist to growing uncertainty over Iran’s participation amid the ongoing regional conflict. The suggestion has drawn attention because Iran has already qualified for the tournament, while Italy failed to make it through qualification.

Trump Envoy Suggests Italy For World Cup

The reported proposal came from Paolo Zampolli, a special envoy linked to President Donald Trump. According to the report, he asked FIFA to consider Italy if Iran does not take part in the tournament. The idea is not an official FIFA decision, and there is no indication that the world governing body has accepted or is actively pursuing such a move.

Italy, a four-time World Cup winner, missed qualification for the 2026 tournament. Iran, by contrast, secured its place through the Asian qualifying process.

Iran World Cup Participation Still In Focus

The report comes as questions continue over whether Iran will ultimately travel to the tournament, which is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Concerns have centred on the wider Iran conflict and the political tensions surrounding matches on U.S. soil.

However, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has publicly indicated that Iran is still expected to take part. Iranian football officials have also signalled that the team intends to participate unless the country’s government decides otherwise.

FIFA World Cup Politics Draw Attention

The episode highlights how geopolitical tensions are now spilling into global sport ahead of one of football’s biggest events. Any move involving Iran’s place would likely trigger major controversy, especially because FIFA rules and continental representation would come into play if a qualified team withdrew.

For now, Iran remains in the World Cup, and the idea of Italy replacing it remains only a reported proposal rather than an approved plan.
