Trump Appoints Matt Gaetz as US Attorney General
President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz as the next Attorney General of the United States.
Announcing his decision on Wednesday, Trump praised Gaetz as a “deeply gifted and tenacious attorney,” citing his commitment to reforming the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Gaetz to Lead DOJ Reforms
Gaetz, trained at William & Mary College of Law, has established himself as a strong advocate for justice reform. In his role on the House Judiciary Committee, Gaetz has been vocal against what Trump termed the “partisan weaponisation of our justice system.” The president-elect noted Gaetz’s influence in uncovering government corruption, particularly in the context of the Russia investigation, often labeled by Gaetz as the “Russia Hoax.”
Trump emphasized that Gaetz’s appointment would bring an end to the politicisation of the DOJ, with a focus on “protecting borders, dismantling criminal organisations, and restoring faith” in the justice system. “Matt will root out systemic corruption at DOJ, returning the Department to its true mission of upholding democracy and the Constitution,” Trump stated.
Gaetz’s Background and Trump’s Vision
As a member of Congress, Gaetz has been known for his fervent support of constitutional values and a transparent justice system. Trump expressed confidence that Gaetz’s leadership would reinvigorate the DOJ’s mission and renew public trust in the department. “Under Matt’s leadership, all Americans will be proud of the Department of Justice once again,” Trump concluded.
This nomination marks another significant addition to Trump’s Cabinet, following recent nominations of former Democrat Tulsi Gabbard as Director of National Intelligence and Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State, as the president-elect rapidly fills top positions ahead of his inauguration.
