Tharoor Says India’s Self-Respect Not for Bargaining
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has criticized recent U.S. trade actions, calling them overly aggressive. He said that India’s national pride should never be up for negotiation, likening U.S. tactics to those of a school bully.
What Tharoor Said
Tharoor described the U.S. imposition of a 25% tariff—and potential penalties—on Indian exports as possibly being a negotiation tactic. But he stressed firmly that India will not compromise its self-respect. He emphasized that millions of livelihoods, especially those dependent on agriculture, cannot be placed at risk to appease foreign demands.
India’s Negotiation Strength
Tharoor reassured that India isn’t without options. He highlighted active trade discussions with the EU and a completed deal with the UK, suggesting the country can diversify its partnerships if necessary. While U.S. is an important market, India’s large domestic demand and ability to access other markets reduces its dependency.
National Interests Come First
According to Tharoor, the Indian negotiating team must hold firm. He urged the public and policymakers to back them while safeguarding national interests. If an equitable agreement cannot be reached, India is ready to walk away from unfair terms.
A Strong Message from Opposition Leaders
Meanwhile, India’s opposition political leaders condemned the U.S.’s approach as disrespectful and harmful to India’s autonomy. They underlined the need to prioritize economic sovereignty and stand united in the face of external pressure.
