Thailand Warns of Floods as Heavy Rain Hits 47 Provinces
Thailand is facing another round of severe weather as heavy to very heavy rain continues across Bangkok and 47 provinces, raising the risk of flash floods, overflowing waterways and landslides through September 27.
Bangkok Flooding Worsens After Prolonged Rain
Bangkok experienced prolonged rainfall on September 25, leaving widespread flooding across several parts of the capital. Some roads became difficult to use after canals overflowed, while more heavy rain is expected across the city and surrounding areas.
Temperatures in Bangkok are forecast to remain between 22°C and 29°C, with widespread thundershowers and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Heavy Rain Warning Covers 47 Thai Provinces
The latest weather warning covers provinces across northern, northeastern, central, eastern and upper southern Thailand.
Very heavy rain is possible in areas including Tak, Phetchabun, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan. Authorities have warned that accumulated rainfall could trigger flash floods, landslides and overflowing rivers, particularly in low-lying areas and communities near foothills and waterways.
The severe conditions are being driven by an active low-pressure system moving across central Thailand along a monsoon trough, combined with a strengthening southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, southern Thailand and the Gulf.
Rough Seas Add to Thailand Weather Risks
Marine conditions are also expected to remain dangerous. Waves in the upper Gulf of Thailand could reach two to three metres and rise above three metres during thunderstorms.
Strong waves are also expected in the Andaman Sea, prompting authorities to advise vessels to operate cautiously. Small boats in the upper Gulf have been advised to remain ashore until conditions improve.
