Spain substitute Ferran Torres eventually scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, ending Argentina’s hopes of retaining the trophy they won in Qatar four years earlier.
Messi’s World Cup Future Remains Unclear
The 39-year-old Messi did not announce his retirement following the defeat and offered no firm indication about whether he would continue representing Argentina.
The final was widely expected to be his last appearance at a World Cup, although he has previously said he would continue playing while physically capable of contributing to the national team.
Messi became the first footballer to start three men’s World Cup finals. He completed an impressive tournament with eight goals and played every minute of Argentina’s knockout-stage campaign.
Spain Deny Argentina Consecutive Titles
Spain controlled much of the final but struggled to convert their opportunities against Martínez, who repeatedly denied the European champions before Torres found the breakthrough.
The victory secured Spain’s second men’s World Cup title and its first since 2010. Argentina finished as runners-up after reaching a second consecutive final under coach Lionel Scaloni.
Messi’s international career already includes the 2022 World Cup and Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024. Any decision about his future is expected after he has had time to reflect on the defeat.
