Tamil Nadu Makes Tamil Thai Vazhthu Mandatory
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has moved a resolution making the rendition of “Tamil Thai Vazhthu” mandatory at the beginning of official events across the state, with the Assembly unanimously backing the proposal. The DMK, AIADMK and other parties supported the move.
Vijay Moves Tamil Thai Vazhthu Resolution
Introducing the resolution in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Vijay emphasised the cultural significance of the Tamil language, declaring that a person’s mother tongue should be regarded as being as pure as their mother.
The resolution mandates that Tamil Thai Vazhthu be rendered as the first item at official programmes conducted by government departments, educational institutions, public sector undertakings and other public institutions across Tamil Nadu.
DMK, AIADMK Back Tamil Anthem Move
Despite their continuing political differences with the TVK government, both the DMK and AIADMK backed Vijay’s resolution.
The unanimous support reflected a rare moment of agreement between Tamil Nadu’s major political parties on an issue involving Tamil language and cultural identity.
The resolution formalises the position of Tamil Thai Vazhthu at the beginning of state functions, while the National Anthem continues to be rendered at the conclusion of official events.
Tamil Anthem Row Followed Vijay Swearing-In
The issue had gained prominence following Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony in May, when Tamil Thai Vazhthu was played after Vande Mataram and the National Anthem.
TVK subsequently objected to the sequence and announced that the traditional practice of beginning official programmes with Tamil Thai Vazhthu would be restored.
Vijay later raised the matter with PM Modi, seeking clarity over the protocol governing the order in which patriotic and state songs are played at official functions.
