The Maharashtra government has formally acquired Mumbai’s iconic Air India Building at Nariman Point in a ₹1,601-crore deal, marking the completion of a long-pending plan to expand government office space in South Mumbai. Maharashtra Acquires Air India Building For ₹1,601 Crore The agreement for the transfer of the landmark property was completed between the Mumbai Collectorate and Air India Assets Holding Limited. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was present during the registration of the deal, which gives the state government control of one of Mumbai’s most recognised commercial towers. The acquisition follows earlier approvals from the state government and the Centre. The deal had been under discussion for several years as the Maharashtra government looked for additional administrative space close to Mantralaya. Air India Building To House Government Offices The state government is expected to shift several departments to the Air India Building after renovation work is completed. Many government offices currently function from rented premises across Mumbai, adding to administrative costs and logistical challenges. The Public Works Department is likely to carry out internal renovation before departments begin operations from the building. The move is expected to improve coordination by bringing more offices closer to the state secretariat. Nariman Point Landmark Gets New Role The 23-storey sea-facing Air India Building has been a major part of Mumbai’s skyline since the 1970s. Located at Nariman Point, the building once served as Air India’s corporate headquarters before the airline shifted its main base to New Delhi. The acquisition gives the Maharashtra government valuable office space in one of Mumbai’s most important business districts. The deal is also seen as part of a broader plan to make better use of prime public assets while reducing dependence on rented office spaces.
