laser anti-drone systems – Bharat Pulse News

In a significant move to upgrade its aerial threat defense, the Indian Army has approved the acquisition of nine additional laser-based anti-drone systems for deployment along the borders with Pakistan and China. The advanced systems are part of India’s ongoing efforts to counter the increasing threat posed by hostile drones used for surveillance, smuggling, and infiltration. The new procurement adds to the Army’s existing fleet of seven laser-enabled Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction Systems (IDD&IS), which have already been deployed in sensitive zones, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir. These systems have proven effective in neutralizing low-altitude drone threats, many of which are suspected to originate from across the western and northern borders. DRDO’s Laser Systems: High-Tech and Battle-Ready Developed by India’s premier defense research organization, the DRDO, the IDD&IS comes equipped with a 2-kilowatt laser capable of disabling enemy drones at a range of up to 1,000 meters. The system integrates radar, electro-optical sensors, and a command-control interface, enabling real-time drone detection and precision neutralization. India has also developed a more powerful 30-kilowatt laser-based variant, capable of engaging larger aerial threats such as aircraft and cruise missiles. This high-energy system is seen as a major leap in India’s indigenous directed-energy weapons capabilities and may see future deployment in strategic sectors. Strengthening National Security and Defense Autonomy The procurement is part of the Army’s emergency acquisition plan to enhance combat readiness in forward areas. Given the surge in drone sightings and cross-border smuggling incidents, particularly in Punjab and Jammu regions, the integration of laser-based systems is viewed as a critical deterrent and response mechanism. Beyond tactical advantages, the initiative also underscores India's commitment to building self-reliant defense technologies. With enhanced indigenous production and rapid deployment of high-tech systems, the Indian Army is steadily advancing toward modern, networked warfare capabilities suited for emerging threats. This latest decision not only boosts the Army’s operational readiness but also signals a clear strategic posture to adversaries—India is investing in precision, speed, and next-generation defense to safeguard its territorial sovereignty.
