Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan to be transferred from prison to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad amid growing concerns over his health. The 73-year-old has been imprisoned since August 2023 and has faced repeated complaints regarding access to medical care. Supreme Court Orders Imran Khan Hospital Transfer The court directed authorities to shift Khan from jail to the private hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. He is expected to remain hospitalised until September 16 or until doctors determine that continued admission is no longer necessary. The court also ordered the formation of a specialist medical panel comprising a cardiologist, general physician, ophthalmologist and Khan’s personal physician to assess his condition and recommend further treatment. Imran Khan Health Concerns Intensify Khan’s family, lawyers and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf have repeatedly raised concerns about his health and access to doctors while in custody. His legal team has previously cited problems involving his eyesight, while more recent concerns have included reports of high blood pressure, heart palpitations and anxiety. The Supreme Court’s intervention comes amid mounting demands for independent medical assessment and improved access to healthcare for the former prime minister. Court Allows Weekly Family Meetings The Supreme Court also directed authorities to facilitate weekly meetings between Khan and members of his family while addressing complaints about restrictions on access to him. Khan has remained incarcerated since 2023 and faces multiple criminal cases arising after his removal from office through a no-confidence vote in 2022. He has denied wrongdoing and maintains that the cases against him are politically motivated.
