Swiggy Instamart Gets Nine FSSAI Notices

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has issued nine notices to Swiggy Instamart following consumer complaints alleging the delivery of expired, spoiled and contaminated food products. The regulator has sought explanations from the quick-commerce platform over possible violations of India’s food safety law.

FSSAI Issues Nine Notices to Swiggy Instamart

The notices were issued after consumers complained about receiving expired, rotten, spoiled, contaminated or otherwise unsafe food items through Swiggy Instamart.

Some complaints reportedly involved milk and other perishable products, raising concerns about storage conditions, inventory monitoring and product handling at facilities serving online orders.

The allegations remain subject to regulatory examination, and the issuance of notices does not by itself establish that Swiggy Instamart committed the alleged violations.

Consumer Complaints Trigger Food Safety Action

FSSAI has sought information regarding the complaints and the steps taken by the company to maintain food safety standards across its quick-commerce operations.

The regulator is examining whether the reported incidents involved violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, including requirements governing the storage, distribution and sale of food products.

Swiggy Instamart may be required to provide compliance reports, details of internal checks and explanations regarding the handling of the affected orders.

Quick-Commerce Food Storage Faces Scrutiny

The action highlights increasing regulatory scrutiny of dark stores and warehouses used by quick-commerce companies to fulfil grocery orders within short delivery periods.

Such facilities must ensure that expired products are removed, temperature-sensitive goods are stored correctly and food items remain protected from contamination.

FSSAI may take further action if its examination finds violations or an inadequate response from the company. Swiggy Instamart’s detailed response to the nine notices was not immediately available.
