SpaceX Prepares to Launch Lunar Trailblazer

SpaceX is gearing up to launch NASA’s Lunar Trailblazer, a mission dedicated to mapping the moon’s water distribution and studying its water cycle. The spacecraft is scheduled to lift off aboard a Falcon 9 rocket no earlier than February 26 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This mission is part of NASA’s Small Innovative Missions for Planetary Exploration (SIMPLEx) program.

Mission Objectives

Lunar Trailblazer aims to detect and map the form, abundance, and distribution of lunar water, providing insights into the moon’s water cycle. The spacecraft will focus on both permanently shadowed regions and sunlit areas, collecting data at various times of the lunar day to observe changes in water signatures as surface temperatures fluctuate.

Innovative Spacecraft Design

Developed by Lockheed Martin, the approximately 440-pound (200-kilogram) Lunar Trailblazer utilizes the company’s new Curio platform—a scalable small satellite architecture designed for cost-effective deep-space exploration. The spacecraft is equipped with two deployable solar arrays and houses instruments capable of peering into the moon’s permanently shadowed regions to identify micro-cold traps less than a football field in size.

Scientific Leadership

The mission is managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and led by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena. Bethany Ehlmann, a professor of planetary science at Caltech, serves as the principal investigator.

Launch Details

Lunar Trailblazer will share its ride to space with the Athena lunar lander, developed by Houston-based company Intuitive Machines. This collaborative launch approach exemplifies the growing trend of rideshare missions, optimizing resources and reducing costs for space exploration endeavors.
