Sikkim Tunnel Explosion Kills 20 Workers
At least 20 people have died following a suspected methane gas explosion inside an under-construction tunnel at the Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project in Sikkim’s Namchi district. Rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate five people who remain missing.

The incident occurred inside the Samardung tunnel near Jholungey, where personnel from state-owned NHPC and contractor Patel Engineering were working. Authorities said 27 people were inside the tunnel when the suspected gas burst and explosion occurred.
Two workers managed to escape, while 20 bodies have since been recovered. Five personnel remain unaccounted for, including an NHPC geologist from Kerala.
Officials have not issued a final determination on the cause. Preliminary assessments indicate that methane trapped within underground rock formations may have accumulated before suddenly escaping and igniting.
Toxic Gases Hamper Rescue Operation
The rescue operation has been complicated by methane, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulphide inside the tunnel. Low oxygen levels, dense fumes, poor visibility and narrow passages have further restricted access.
Several emergency personnel reportedly experienced breathing difficulties during initial attempts to enter the tunnel. Specialised teams equipped with gas-protective suits, breathing apparatus and oxygen cylinders were subsequently deployed.
Personnel from the NDRF, SDRF, Sikkim Police, Fire and Emergency Services and district administration are participating in the operation.
Teesta Hydropower Project Investigation
The tunnel forms part of NHPC’s Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project and is designed to carry water towards the power-generation facility. Senior NHPC officials are overseeing rescue efforts at the site.
The Sikkim government has constituted an expert committee to investigate the suspected gas leak and circumstances surrounding the accident. It also announced compensation of ₹4 lakh for each bereaved family and ₹50,000 for every injured person.
Authorities said locating the five missing personnel remains the immediate priority.
