Siberia Lab Death Triggers Plague Investigation

A 28-year-old laboratory worker at a plague research institute in Siberia has died from pneumonia of unknown origin, prompting Russian authorities to quarantine around 200 contacts and launch an emergency public health investigation.

Siberia Lab Worker Dies After Mysterious Illness

The woman, identified as Darya Shipilova, worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East.

Authorities said she died after developing pneumonia of an as-yet unidentified cause. Reports suggesting that she had been exposed to live plague bacteria during a laboratory accident have not been substantiated.

Russia’s health watchdog said no evidence had been found of an accident involving dangerous pathogens at the institute.

Around 200 Contacts Placed Under Quarantine

Authorities traced approximately 200 people who had been in contact with Shipilova and placed them under medical observation.

Parts of the hospital in Shelekhov where she was treated were cordoned off, while health officials intensified testing and monitoring.

Among those quarantined, two COVID-19 infections and two rhinovirus cases were detected. No additional plague cases or other serious infectious diseases have been reported.

WHO Says Public Health Risk Remains Low

The World Health Organization said the available information indicates that the risk to the general public is currently low, although further assessments will be carried out as more information emerges.

Russian officials have said there is currently no confirmed connection between Shipilova’s death and her work at the anti-plague institute.

US President Donald Trump offered American assistance, while Washington said it was closely monitoring developments.
