SC May Scrub Bihar Voter Roll Revision If Illegalities Found
The Supreme Court of India has warned that it may cancel the entire Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar if any illegality is found in the methodology used by the Election Commission of India (ECI). A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi made this clear while hearing petitions challenging the SIR.
Aadhaar & Identity Documents
On September 8, the Supreme Court directed that Aadhaar be accepted as the twelfth valid document for inclusion in Bihar’s electoral rolls under the SIR. The court emphasized that Aadhaar does not establish citizenship but is valid for identity and residence verification.
Pan-India Implication
The bench also stated that its final verdict on the Bihar SIR will have implications for SIR exercises across India. It refused to give a partial or “piecemeal” ruling limited to Bihar alone.
Next Hearing Date
The Court has set October 7, 2025, for final arguments on the validity of the SIR exercise in Bihar. It rejected petitions seeking an earlier hearing before the final voter list is published.
