RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat Denies Retirement Rule at 75

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said he never stated that he or anyone else should retire at the age of 75. Speaking at the Sangh’s centenary celebrations in New Delhi, he explained that his earlier anecdote about a leader jokingly linking a ceremonial shawl at 75 to retirement was misunderstood. Bhagwat stressed that in the RSS, service continues as long as the organisation requires it.

Age Not a Factor in Duties

Bhagwat explained that responsibilities in the Sangh are based on the organisation’s needs, not on personal preferences or age. He said that even if he turned 80 and was asked to run a shakha, he would continue. He also underlined that the Sangh always has multiple leaders ready to step in, making leadership about continuity and commitment rather than age.

Political Speculation Addressed

The clarification followed speculation that Bhagwat’s earlier comment was aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who turns 75 next year. Opposition leaders had suggested it hinted at an informal age bar for leadership. Bhagwat, however, dismissed such interpretations, making it clear that no such rule exists within the RSS or its affiliated political structures.
