India’s skipper Rohit Sharma will miss the first Test against Australia in Perth as he stays in Adelaide to spend time with his newborn child, sources confirmed. In his absence, Jasprit Bumrah will step in to lead the team.
KL Rahul, who had sustained a blow to his elbow during a practice match, eased concerns about his availability by participating in an extended net session. Rahul is expected to open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal in the first Test, which begins on November 22 at the Optus Stadium.
Speaking to the media, Rahul expressed his readiness: “I had got a bad hit on Day 1 of the game. I am feeling good today, getting ready for the first game. Happy that I could come here early and get used to the conditions.”
His recovery comes as a relief for the team, especially after Shubman Gill was ruled out with a fractured thumb.
The Indian squad concluded its training at the WACA ground and will begin match drills at the Optus Stadium from Tuesday after a scheduled rest day.
Team Physio Kamlesh Jain confirmed Rahul’s fitness, stating, “The key for us was to ensure that there is no fracture. He has responded well to treatments and should be ready to go.”
With Bumrah at the helm and Rahul fit, India looks to begin the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on a strong note in Australia.
