Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has challenged critics of E20 petrol to produce one verified case of a vehicle being damaged by ethanol-blended fuel, saying no automaker has reported such a complaint.

Gadkari defended the government’s ethanol blending programme amid rising criticism over whether E20 petrol can damage engines, reduce mileage or affect older vehicles.

He said critics should show one petrol vehicle that has suffered confirmed damage because of ethanol. According to him, automobile manufacturers have not submitted any such verified complaint to the government.

The minister said the campaign against E20 was based on misinformation and fear, and argued that ethanol blending had been introduced after technical assessment and consultation.

E20 Fuel Debate Intensifies In India

E20 petrol contains 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. The government has promoted it as part of a wider plan to reduce crude oil imports, cut emissions and support domestic ethanol production.

However, vehicle owners and industry watchers have raised concerns over possible impact on fuel efficiency, engine components and older vehicles not originally designed for higher ethanol blends.

The debate has gained attention as E20 availability has expanded across fuel pumps, with many consumers questioning whether they have enough choice between different petrol blends.

Ethanol Blending Policy Under Scrutiny

Gadkari said ethanol is cleaner, domestically produced and beneficial for farmers and the economy. He also argued that alternative fuels are necessary for India to reduce pollution and dependence on imported petroleum.

The government has maintained that modern vehicles are compatible with E20, while older vehicles may require proper maintenance and component compatibility checks.

The controversy is likely to continue as consumers seek clearer assurances from automakers and fuel retailers on mileage, warranty coverage and long-term vehicle performance.
