Rajnath Singh Urges Military Leaders to Embrace Tech for Strategic Edge
Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has called on military leaders to adopt a forward-thinking approach in addressing modern challenges. Speaking at the MPhil Convocation ceremony of the 62nd National Defence College (NDC) course in New Delhi on October 19, 2024, Singh emphasized the need for military officers to think critically, adapt quickly, and embrace the latest technological advancements to secure a strategic advantage in today’s complex geopolitical environment.
Leveraging Modern Warfare Technology
Singh highlighted how warfare now extends beyond traditional battlefields, evolving into multi-domain operations that encompass cyber, space, and information warfare. He noted that cyber-attacks, disinformation campaigns, and economic warfare can destabilize nations without a single shot being fired. To counter these threats, military leaders must become proficient in analyzing complex problems and devising innovative solutions.
Singh stressed the significance of cutting-edge technologies such as drones, autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence (AI), and quantum computing in shaping modern warfare. He urged officers to not only understand these technologies but also harness their potential to revolutionize military operations.
AI and Ethical Dilemmas in Warfare
Singh also addressed the growing reliance on AI in decision-making processes, emphasizing the importance of human intervention in such systems. He warned that the increased use of AI raises concerns about accountability and unintended consequences, making it essential to define the threshold for AI’s involvement in critical decisions.
Adapting NDC Curriculum for Unconventional Warfare
Recognizing the changing nature of warfare, Singh called for institutions like the NDC to evolve their curriculum. He urged the incorporation of case studies on unconventional warfare, and for defense officers to develop strategic foresight and the ability to anticipate emerging threats. He also recommended introducing online modules on critical subjects to expand the institution’s reach, enabling more officers to benefit from its knowledge regardless of location or time constraints.
Shri Rajnath Singh congratulated the graduating officers of the 62nd NDC course, particularly those from friendly nations, describing them as a vital bridge between India and their respective countries. The course’s insights, he noted, would help enhance regional security and collective prosperity.
Key dignitaries attending the event included Defence Secretary-designate Shri RK Singh, Commandant NDC Air Marshal Hardeep Bains, and University of Madras Professor S. Elumalai.
