Quad Remains Vital, Says Japan Minister

Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi has said the Quad remains a vital grouping for the Indo-Pacific, rejecting concerns that the platform has lost relevance. His remarks came ahead of the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, where India will host ministers from Japan, the United States and Australia.

Quad Foreign Ministers Meet In New Delhi

The Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is scheduled to be held in New Delhi on May 26, 2026. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will host his counterparts from the United States, Japan and Australia.

The meeting is expected to review ongoing Quad initiatives and discuss cooperation across key areas linked to regional security, economic resilience, technology and supply chains.

Japan Backs Free And Open Indo-Pacific

Motegi said the Quad continues to play an important role in supporting a free and open Indo-Pacific. Japan has consistently backed the grouping as a platform for coordination among democracies facing shared regional challenges.

The Indo-Pacific agenda is expected to include maritime security, regional stability, infrastructure cooperation and concerns over coercive actions in the region.

Critical Minerals Cooperation Tops Agenda

Critical minerals cooperation is expected to be one of the major focus areas at the New Delhi meeting. The issue has gained importance as countries seek to reduce dependence on concentrated supply chains for rare earths, batteries, clean energy and advanced technologies.

The Quad members are likely to discuss ways to strengthen resilient supply chains and deepen cooperation in strategic sectors. The meeting will also help prepare the agenda for the next Quad leaders’ summit.
