Putin Proposes Ukraine Summit With Trump and Xi

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly proposed a trilateral summit with US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss ending the Ukraine war. The proposal comes amid growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy seeks to maintain American support for peace negotiations and military assistance.

Putin Proposes Ukraine Peace Summit With Trump and Xi

Putin reportedly suggested the meeting during an October 9 telephone conversation with Trump. Moscow has proposed holding discussions alongside the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China, scheduled for November 18–19.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged preliminary discussions but indicated that neither the meeting nor its agenda had been finalised. Trump has not formally accepted the proposal.

The proposed summit would involve Russia, China and the United States without direct Ukrainian participation, raising questions about Kyiv’s role in negotiations concerning its territory and security.

Trump and Zelenskyy Clash Over Russia Sanctions

Trump has accused Zelenskyy of obstructing efforts to end the conflict and criticised Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries for disrupting international fuel markets.

Washington recently announced an agreement to purchase Russian diesel and temporarily eased key sanctions against Moscow.

Zelenskyy warned that reducing economic pressure on Russia could prolong the conflict. Nevertheless, he held discussions with American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, addressing peace negotiations and Ukraine’s requirements for Patriot air defence systems.

Russia-Ukraine Energy Attacks Continue

Diplomatic developments coincided with renewed Russian and Ukrainian attacks targeting energy infrastructure.

Zelenskyy accused Moscow of repeatedly violating a proposed energy ceasefire, reporting extensive electricity disruptions across Ukrainian regions.

Meanwhile, Russian authorities reported Ukrainian drone strikes near Saint Petersburg, including damage to energy facilities and at least one fatality.

Despite renewed diplomatic initiatives, significant disagreements over territorial control, sanctions and security guarantees continue to complicate efforts to end the war.
