Austrian Airlines Flight Diverted Over Bomb Threat
An Austrian Airlines flight travelling from Tel Aviv to Vienna made an emergency landing in Bulgaria on Sunday, October 18, following a reported bomb threat. The Airbus A320, carrying 51 passengers and six crew members, landed safely at Sofia Airport after being escorted by a Bulgarian Air Force fighter jet.
Austrian Airlines Flight OS82 Diverted to Sofia
Flight OS82 departed Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport on Sunday evening and was approaching Romanian airspace when the crew received information about a possible bomb threat.
Bulgaria’s Transport Ministry said the pilots decided to divert the aircraft to Sofia as a precautionary measure. The country’s Defence Ministry subsequently deployed a MiG-29 fighter jet to escort the passenger aircraft.
All 57 people aboard safely disembarked following the emergency landing. No injuries were reported.
Bulgaria Launches Investigation Into Bomb Threat
Bulgarian authorities established a crisis response team and initiated an investigation to determine the origin and credibility of the threat.
Security personnel conducted an inspection of the aircraft to check for suspicious objects or explosives. The airline confirmed that affected passengers would be accommodated on alternative flights following the completion of security procedures.
Flight-tracking information indicated that the aircraft transmitted emergency transponder code 7700 before changing course towards Bulgaria.
Aviation Security Concerns on Israel Routes
The diversion follows another aviation security incident involving an Israel-bound aircraft in September 2026.
A Flydubai flight carrying 174 passengers was diverted to Saudi Arabia after a co-pilot allegedly attacked another pilot and attempted to bring down the aircraft. Authorities in the United Arab Emirates subsequently filed terrorism-related charges against the accused.
The latest incident has prompted Bulgarian authorities to examine the circumstances surrounding the bomb threat while ensuring the safety of passengers and aviation operations.
