Policeman Killed in Anantnag Terror Attack
A Jammu and Kashmir Police head constable was killed after suspected terrorists opened fire on a police party in Anantnag town on Wednesday, officials confirmed.

The attack occurred at approximately 12.30 p.m. in the Lal Chowk area of Anantnag. The police team targeted in the firing had been deployed to provide security for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra.
Head Constable Ashiq Hussain, aged 35, sustained critical gunshot injuries during the attack. He was immediately taken to Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag, where doctors declared him dead.
Hussain was serving with the 3rd Battalion of the India Reserve Police. No other casualties were immediately reported in the firing.
Security Forces Launch Search Operation
Police and other security forces cordoned off the attack site shortly after the shooting. A search operation was launched across the surrounding areas to locate the assailants, who reportedly escaped following the attack.
Additional personnel were deployed at key locations in Anantnag as investigators began collecting evidence and examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Authorities had not released information about the number or identities of the attackers. No terrorist organisation had officially claimed responsibility at the time of reporting.
Amarnath Yatra Security Heightened
The attack occurred during the Amarnath Yatra, when security deployment is increased across Jammu and Kashmir to protect pilgrims, transport routes and accommodation facilities.
Police personnel, paramilitary forces and the Army maintain a coordinated security network along the pilgrimage routes and in surrounding districts. The targeting of a police party assigned to Yatra security has prompted a heightened alert and further review of local arrangements.
Officials said the search for those responsible was continuing. Further details were expected after the completion of preliminary investigations.
