PM Modi Sets New Priorities for Indian Banking
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has outlined plans to make India’s banking system more efficient, secure and dependable over the next decade, identifying cybersecurity as a critical priority. Speaking at the inauguration of the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Data Centre and Cybersecurity Training Institute in Bhubaneswar on October 25, 2026, Modi said the government’s focus was shifting from expanding financial inclusion towards improving the reliability of banking services.
PM Modi Prioritises Banking Efficiency and Cybersecurity
Modi said the previous decade had focused on bringing financially excluded citizens into the formal banking system through initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana.
The coming decade, he explained, would concentrate on strengthening banking efficiency, reliability and digital security.
The Prime Minister warned that modern conflicts increasingly involve attacks on economic infrastructure, making financial institutions vulnerable to cybercriminals and cyberterrorists.
He emphasised the need for advanced computing systems, modern infrastructure and trained cybersecurity professionals to counter evolving threats.
RBI Data Centre to Strengthen Digital Banking Infrastructure
The newly inaugurated RBI facility at Jatni, near Bhubaneswar, will support critical financial infrastructure, including payment and settlement systems.
The Cybersecurity Training Institute will provide specialised training and research in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and quantum computing.
The facilities are designed to strengthen operational resilience and protect financial services against technological disruptions.
Modi Highlights Jan Dhan and Financial Inclusion Reforms
Modi said more than 59 crore Jan Dhan accounts had helped expand banking access and facilitate direct transfers of government benefits.
He highlighted initiatives such as MUDRA, PM SVANidhi and PM Vishwakarma for improving formal credit access for entrepreneurs, street vendors and traditional artisans.
The Prime Minister also described Odisha as an emerging centre for data centres, semiconductors and advanced computing.
He maintained that stronger digital infrastructure would support India’s economic development and ensure more dependable financial services for citizens.
