PM Modi Puts Energy Security at Heart of India 2047
Prime Minister Narendra Modi placed energy security at the centre of India’s development ambitions during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort on August 15. He said rising electricity demand from artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing and data centres made expanding domestic and alternative energy sources increasingly important.
Modi Calls Energy Security a National Priority
Addressing the nation on the 80th Independence Day, Modi said India would require significantly more electricity as emerging technologies and high-tech industries expand.
He stressed the need to strengthen domestic energy capacity and reduce vulnerabilities arising from dependence on external sources.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the expansion of piped natural gas distribution, saying coverage had increased significantly over the past decade.
India Targets 200 GW Nuclear Energy Capacity
Modi highlighted nuclear power as an important part of India’s future energy strategy and said the country has set a target of reaching 200 gigawatts of nuclear energy capacity.
He also referred to plans for additional nuclear reactors as India seeks to diversify electricity generation and meet growing industrial demand.
Solar energy remains another major part of the strategy, with millions of households being brought under rooftop solar programmes.
Energy Push Linked to Viksit Bharat 2047
Modi linked the expansion of India’s energy capacity with the broader goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
He also highlighted growth in defence production, electronics manufacturing, mobile phone production, digital transactions and infrastructure, arguing that sustained industrial expansion would require a secure and reliable energy base.
