PM Modi Inaugurates India’s First Bamboo-Based Ethanol Plant
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country’s first bamboo-based second-generation bioethanol plant in Assam’s Golaghat district. The project, located near the Numaligarh Refinery, marks a major step in India’s renewable energy push.
Features of the Plant
The facility is designed as a zero-waste plant, using every part of bamboo to produce ethanol. It also generates valuable byproducts such as green furfural, green acetic acid, bio-coal, and food-grade carbon dioxide. In addition, the plant produces around 25 MW of green electricity.
Economic and Regional Benefits
Built at an estimated cost of ₹5,000–₹5,200 crore, the plant will source bamboo from across Assam and other northeastern states. It is expected to provide new income opportunities for farmers, encourage bamboo cultivation, and boost the rural economy of the region.
Additional Projects Announced
During the visit, Modi also laid the foundation stone for a polypropylene plant aimed at reducing India’s dependence on imports. He highlighted the importance of sustainable energy projects and underlined the government’s commitment to promoting clean fuel and self-reliance in energy.
