Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held a telephone conversation on October 13, 2026, agreeing to strengthen bilateral cooperation in trade, energy, technology and security. The discussion comes amid improving diplomatic relations between India and Canada, with both governments working towards a comprehensive trade agreement and preparations underway for PM Modi’s visit to Canada in December.

PM Modi and Mark Carney Push India-Canada Trade Deal

The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to concluding negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) at the earliest opportunity.

The proposed agreement is expected to support efforts to double bilateral trade by 2030, while expanding cooperation in investment, energy, technology and agriculture.

PM Modi described the conversation as productive and expressed confidence that closer cooperation would contribute to global stability and economic prosperity.

India-Canada Relations Show Signs of Recovery

The diplomatic engagement follows a period of strained relations under former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whose government accused Indian agents of involvement in the 2023 killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India rejected the allegations.

Both countries have subsequently taken steps to restore diplomatic engagement and strengthen cooperation on security and law enforcement.

Recent discussions between senior security officials have focused on combating terrorism, organised crime and other cross-border threats.

PM Modi’s Canada Visit Scheduled for December

Canada confirmed that PM Modi is expected to visit the country in December 2026, potentially marking another significant step in rebuilding bilateral relations.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu are also visiting India for discussions with senior Indian officials.

The two Prime Ministers additionally discussed geopolitical instability in the Indo-Pacific and cooperation in energy and agriculture.

Carney acknowledged India’s diplomatic efforts towards a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
