Pakistan Seeks Closer Trade, Investment And Defence Cooperation With Bangladesh

Pakistan’s Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Chairman, General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, met Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka on October 26, 2025, to discuss enhancing bilateral trade, investment and defence cooperation between the two countries. Pakistan emphasised the importance of shared historical and cultural ties in strengthening their partnership.

Scope of Cooperation

During the talks, both sides stressed growing opportunities for trade and investment, including plans to operationalise a sea link between Karachi and Chittagong. An air route between Dhaka and Karachi is expected to open in the coming months. On defence, Mirza expressed Pakistan’s interest in deeper military collaboration with Bangladesh. Both countries also highlighted the need for joint efforts to counter disinformation and misuse of social media by non-state actors.

Strategic Significance

The meeting signals a thaw in relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh after years of limited engagement. Improved links could open pathways for mutual economic benefit, but both governments noted that much work remains on institutionalising cooperation. Analysts say that while the agenda is ambitious, tangible results will depend on follow-up mechanisms and clear timelines.
