Olympia Coffee House Licence Suspended
Mumbai’s iconic 108-year-old Olympia Coffee House in Colaba has had its food licence suspended by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration after inspectors found multiple serious hygiene and food-safety violations. The restaurant had recently attracted attention after filmmaker Christopher Nolan and actors Matt Damon and Tom Holland visited it during their Mumbai trip.
Olympia Coffee House Licence Suspended
The FDA action followed a consumer complaint and an inspection of the popular South Mumbai restaurant.
Officials said inspectors found a urinal located inside a food storage area, along with unhygienic food preparation and utensil-washing facilities. Food was allegedly being handled directly on the floor, while unclean water was also being used.
The inspection further revealed cockroach and fly infestation, along with meat and blood residue inside a refrigerator.
FDA Finds Serious Hygiene Violations
Authorities also found improper segregation of raw vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, damaged wooden chopping boards and inadequate protective clothing for employees handling food.
Of the establishment’s 35 food handlers, 34 had reportedly not completed the required food-safety training.
Mandatory water-testing reports and other essential sanitation records were also unavailable during the inspection.
Maharashtra FDA Widens Food Safety Crackdown
Olympia Coffee House is not the only establishment facing regulatory action. The FDA also suspended the licence of the canteen at Mumbai’s Nair Hospital after identifying serious food-safety and hygiene violations.
Licences of several other food businesses across Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur have either been suspended or cancelled as part of a wider enforcement drive.
Olympia Coffee House had gained international attention in July when Nolan, Damon and Holland visited the establishment ahead of the Indian premiere of The Odyssey.
