Nirav Modi Extradition Nears Final Stage
Fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi is expected to be extradited to India soon after losing his legal challenge before the European Court of Human Rights, clearing one of the final hurdles in the long-running Punjab National Bank fraud case.
Nirav Modi Extradition Nears Final Stage
Indian authorities are preparing for the next steps to bring Nirav Modi back from the United Kingdom, where he has remained in custody since his arrest in London in March 2019.
The latest setback came after his challenge before the European Court of Human Rights failed. This follows earlier rulings by UK courts that rejected his attempts to block extradition to India.
Punjab National Bank Fraud Case
Nirav Modi is wanted in India in connection with the Punjab National Bank fraud case, estimated at more than ₹13,000 crore. Indian agencies have accused him and others of using fraudulent letters of undertaking to raise overseas credit.
The Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate are pursuing separate cases involving criminal conspiracy, cheating, corruption and money laundering.
UK India Extradition Process
The extradition process has been delayed for years because of multiple legal challenges, including arguments related to health, prison conditions and human rights concerns.
UK courts had earlier accepted India’s assurances regarding his custody, trial and medical care. With the European court route now closed, officials believe there are no major legal barriers left to his return.
Once extradited, Nirav Modi is expected to face trial in India in the cases filed by the CBI and ED. His return would mark a significant development in India’s efforts to bring back economic offenders facing serious financial fraud allegations.
