NALSAR Students Oppose CJI as Convocation Guest
A section of students at NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad has urged the administration to reconsider inviting Chief Justice of India Surya Kant as chief guest for its upcoming convocation, citing his reported remarks during proceedings related to alleged police action against CJP protesters in Delhi.

At least six separate representations have been submitted by students from different batches. Students claim the letters collectively carry around 350 to 450 signatures, although that figure has not been independently verified.
The students said the choice of convocation guest should reflect NALSAR’s commitment to constitutional rights, access to justice and engagement with grievances.
The university administration had not publicly responded to the representations at the time of reporting.
CJI Remarks During CJP Protest Case Cited
The objections centre on remarks attributed to CJI Surya Kant when a lawyer sought urgent intervention over alleged police excesses during the July 20 “Chalo Sansad” protest.
Students specifically cited his reported statements that the court did not have time to watch videos and that counsel should not waste the court’s time.
The remarks became a key reason cited by students opposing his presence as chief guest at the convocation.
Supreme Court Later Listed Protest Plea
The CJI subsequently clarified that no formal writ petition had been filed when the matter was initially mentioned and rejected suggestions that the Supreme Court had refused to hear a properly filed case.
The Supreme Court later agreed to hear petitions concerning the alleged police action and listed the matter for hearing.
The date of NALSAR’s convocation has not yet been finalised.
