Nagpur Violence: Woman Police Officer Molested Amid Clashes Over Aurangzeb Tomb Dispute

Violence Erupts Over Aurangzeb Tomb Dispute
The unrest began in the Chitnis Park area of Mahal, Nagpur, when tensions flared over reports of a holy book being desecrated during a protest. The demonstration was led by right-wing groups demanding the demolition of Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. As the situation escalated, violent mobs began attacking police personnel and public property.
Assault on Woman Police Officer
According to the FIR, a woman constable from the Riot Control Police (RCP) unit was assaulted by rioters who exploited the darkness to inappropriately touch her. The attackers attempted to disrobe her, hurled abusive language, and made vulgar gestures at other female officers. The mob also physically attacked police personnel trying to restore order.
Escalation and Mob Violence
Armed with axes, sticks, and stones, the rioters resorted to violent tactics, including hurling petrol bombs at police officers. Despite efforts by senior officers to control the crowd, the violence escalated as police vehicles, traffic booths, and nearby residences were set ablaze. Heavy damage was also inflicted on a flyover construction site, where cranes were torched.
Arrests and Legal Action
Police have arrested 51 individuals and registered multiple FIRs under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Criminal Law Amendment Act, and the Maharashtra Police Act. The cases involve named accused as well as hundreds of unidentified individuals suspected of participating in the riots.
Mastermind in Custody
Authorities have arrested a local political leader believed to be the mastermind behind the violence. He was allegedly captured on video delivering an inflammatory speech shortly before the riots erupted. He has been remanded in police custody as investigations continue.
Security Measures and Community Response
A curfew has been imposed in sensitive areas, with over 2,000 security personnel deployed to prevent further escalation. Meanwhile, right-wing supporters have vowed to boycott businesses they claim are linked to those involved in the riots. Demands for stricter action against the rioters continue to grow.
