Myanmar Blast Kills Over 45 Near China Border

More than 45 people were killed and around 70 others injured after a powerful explosion hit a building reportedly used to store mining explosives in northeastern Myanmar. The blast occurred in Kaungtup village in Namhkam township, close to the China border.

Myanmar Blast Kills Dozens In Namhkam

The explosion took place around noon on Sunday in an area controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army, an ethnic armed group active in northern Shan State. Rescue workers reported widespread destruction after the blast ripped through the village.

At least 46 bodies were reportedly recovered, including children, while dozens of injured people were taken to hospital. Rescue and relief operations continued as local teams searched damaged structures.

Explosives Storage Building Under Probe

The building was reportedly being used to store explosives meant for mining activity. Local reports said the force of the explosion damaged or destroyed several homes nearby, leaving residents displaced.

The exact cause of the blast has not been officially confirmed. The Ta’ang National Liberation Army has said an investigation is underway and that assistance will be provided to affected families.

Myanmar Conflict Zone Faces Fresh Tragedy

The incident took place in a conflict-affected region of Myanmar, where ethnic armed groups, military forces and local communities remain caught in instability following the 2021 coup.

The location near the Chinese border also adds sensitivity to the incident, as northern Shan State is strategically important for trade, security and armed group activity. The blast has again raised concerns over the storage of explosive materials in civilian areas.
