Mumbai Airport to Cut 265 Weekly Overseas Flights

Mumbai International Airport will temporarily cut 265 weekly international flights from October 25 as Terminal 1 prepares to shut for redevelopment and domestic operations are shifted to Terminal 2.

Mumbai Airport to Cut 265 Weekly International Flights

Mumbai International Airport Limited has asked 46 Indian and foreign airlines to reduce international departure slots by 33% from the start of the winter schedule on October 25.

The affected airlines currently operate about 770 weekly international departures from Terminal 2. The reduced overseas capacity will be used to accommodate domestic passengers and flights shifting from Terminal 1.

IndiGo is expected to cut 74 weekly international flights, while Air India will reduce 33. Akasa Air, Air India Express and SpiceJet are also expected to trim services.

Emirates and Etihad Among Foreign Airlines Affected

Among foreign carriers, Emirates and Etihad Airways are each expected to cut 10 weekly flights from Mumbai.

The airport operator plans to reallocate check-in counters, baggage belts, boarding gates and other infrastructure at Terminal 2 to domestic airlines moving from T1.

Around five million domestic passengers annually are expected to be affected by the terminal transition.

Terminal 1 Redevelopment Begins in January 2027

The redevelopment of Terminal 1 is scheduled to begin in January 2027, with discussions also underway over potentially shifting some international operations to Navi Mumbai International Airport.

Several airlines have raised concerns about the transition plan, particularly over forced relocation, slot rights and splitting operations between Mumbai’s two airports.

The changes are expected to remain temporary while Terminal 1 is redeveloped and Mumbai’s dual-airport system expands.
