Modi at G7 Urges Unified Global Stance Against Terrorism

Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the G7 platform in Kananaskis, Canada, to deliver a sharp message against global inaction and hypocrisy on terrorism. Speaking to world leaders during the second day of the summit, Modi criticized the practice of rewarding nations that openly support terrorism while others face strict accountability, calling for a uniform international framework to combat extremist threats.

“You cannot have one rule for one, and another for others,” Modi declared, making it clear that India’s position on terrorism is non-negotiable. He emphasized that rewarding terror-sponsoring states with aid or silence encourages impunity and destabilizes regional and global peace.

Global Terrorism

Modi’s remarks were aimed at highlighting the global consequences of selective counter-terror efforts. He demanded that all nations backing terrorism must face consistent and enforceable consequences, regardless of their geopolitical value. India, he stressed, has long borne the brunt of cross-border terrorism and expects principled support from the international community in its efforts to neutralize threats, particularly emanating from Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Smuggling and Repression

The Indian Prime Minister also broadened the discussion to include organized human smuggling and political repression, warning that these issues are often tightly interlinked with terrorist networks. He urged the G7 bloc to address these threats in an integrated manner, calling for transnational crackdowns and intelligence-sharing mechanisms that span both security and human rights domains.

Modi’s intervention led to strong backing among G7 members, who acknowledged the necessity of a global consensus not only on terrorism but also on other security risks such as cybercrime and illicit trafficking.

Peace, Security and the Global South

Reinforcing his long-standing message that “this is not an era of war,” Modi pressed for collective peacebuilding and de-escalation across volatile regions. He made special reference to regions destabilized by extremist violence, reiterating India’s concern about safe havens being used for launching terror campaigns.

On the sidelines, Modi met with leaders including Canadian PM Mark Carney, Germany’s Olaf Scholz, UK’s Rishi Sunak, and Italy’s Giorgia Meloni. His discussions covered energy transition, artificial intelligence, global trade frameworks, and the interests of the Global South.

Notably, Modi also concluded a diplomatic breakthrough with Canada, agreeing to restore full ambassadorial ties after a period of tension. The restoration of High Commissioners signals a willingness to stabilize key bilateral relationships even as India maintains firm positions on core security issues.

As the G7 summit concluded, Modi’s address stood out not just for its clarity, but for demanding consistency from the world’s most powerful democracies in addressing the shared threat of terrorism.
