Mike Hussey Named Australia Cricket Consultant Coach
Former Australian batter Mike Hussey has been appointed consultant coach of the national men’s cricket team for the 2027 Ashes and ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. The 51-year-old will also serve as a T20 advisor as Australia prepare for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Mike Hussey Joins Australia’s Coaching Setup
Cricket Australia confirmed Hussey’s expanded responsibilities on Friday, November 6, bringing the former international batter into a more formal coaching arrangement across formats.
His assignment will begin with Australia’s five-match T20I series against England, starting November 21. He will also assist preparations for the upcoming home Test series against New Zealand.
The appointment comes after Australia’s recent batting difficulties, including a 2-1 Test series defeat to South Africa in October.
Australia Targets 2027 Ashes and 2028 Olympics
Hussey’s responsibilities will include strategic planning, opposition analysis, player scouting and performance development, particularly in T20 cricket.
Cricket Australia’s national teams general manager Ben Oliver explained that Hussey would provide additional T20 expertise while Australia’s schedule remains heavily focused on Test cricket.
The former batter will work alongside head coach Andrew McDonald, team management and selectors as Australia prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup in southern Africa and cricket’s return to the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.
Hussey Brings Extensive International Coaching Experience
Hussey represented Australia in 302 international matches across formats, averaging more than 51 in Test cricket during his distinguished playing career.
He previously worked with Australia’s coaching staff and was part of England’s support team during their victorious 2022 T20 World Cup campaign.
Hussey also served as Chennai Super Kings’ batting coach in the Indian Premier League from 2018 until 2026.
McDonald welcomed the appointment, highlighting Hussey’s extensive playing and coaching experience across international cricket and domestic competitions.
